The Imperfect Church- A Wise Guy

The Imperfect Church- First Corinthians Part 1

Speaker: Pastor Tim Fraiser

A perfect church is as elusive as finding a Yeti riding atop a Unicorn in flight toward Atlantis. Perhaps you've heard the saying when it comes to modern church, "No perfect people allowed," but that is not totally true. There is one perfect person who actually leads the church-His name is Jesus! And He gathers imperfect people together to be His people on His mission for His glory and their good! Yet, along the way, we have a hard time playing nice together, laying down our personal preferences, and giving up the sins that destroy us, our unity and our witness to the outside world. Welcome to The Imperfect Church! Join us as we follow the perfect one-Jesus-and discover how He loves the imperfect church as we walk through the book of First Corinthians.

Title: A Wise Guy

1 Corinthians 2:1- 1And I, when I came to you, brothers, did not come proclaiming to you the testimony of God with lofty speech or wisdom.

1 Corinthians 2:2- 2For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.

1 Corinthians 2:6 - 6Yet among the mature we do impart wisdom, although it is not a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are doomed to pass away.

Quote: “We are drowning in information, while starving for wisdom." - Edward Olson

1 Corinthians 2:7 - 7But we impart a secret and hidden wisdom of God, which God decreed before the ages for our glory.

Ephesians 1:4 - 4even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love

1 Corinthians 2:8 - 8None of the rulers of this age understood this, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.

1 Corinthians 2:9 - 9But, as it is written, "What no eye has seen, nor ear heard,

nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him"—

Quote:              Honestly, can you think of any greater insult you could ever give to Jesus than the really popular thing that everybody loves to say. And that is there really were multiple ways of salvation! I know you think you are being compassionate and open-minded when you say there are multiple ways to God and you slap a co-exist bumper sticker on your car. But honestly is there any greater insult you could ever give to Jesus? That Jesus looked up at God his Father and said, “If there is any other way let this cup pass from me...” And God the Father looks at Jesus and says there are actually other ways— as long as you are sincere, and kind and do what you think is best then you’ll make it to heaven. But I am going to have you go through this bitter torture anyway for the fun of it… There was no other way to save us—this was the only way. And so, God did it gladly! - JD Greear

1 Corinthians 2:10-16 - 10these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. 11For who knows a person's thoughts except the spirit of that person, which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. 12Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God. 13And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual.14The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned. 15The spiritual person judges all things, but is himself to be judged by no one. 16"For who has understood the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him?" But we have the mind of Christ.

James 4:17 - 17So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.
