Title -  You Become What You Behold

John 1:29- 29The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!

John 1:30-  30This is he of whom I said, 'After me comes a man who ranks before me, because he was before me.'

John 1:31- 31I myself did not know him, but for this purpose I came baptizing with water, that he might be revealed to Israel."

John 1:32 - 32And John bore witness: "I saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him.

John 1:33- 33I myself did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, 'He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.'

1 Corinthians 12:13-  13For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit.

John 1:34- 34And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God."

John 1:29- 29The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!

Genesis 22:6-8-  6And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son. And he took in his hand the fire and the knife. So they went both of them together. 7And Isaac said to his father Abraham, "My father!" And he said, "Here I am, my son." He said, "Behold, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?" 8Abraham said, "God will provide for himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son." So they went both of them together.

Genesis 22:9-13- 9When they came to the place of which God had told him, Abraham built the altar there and laid the wood in order and bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. 10Then Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to slaughter his son. 11But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, "Abraham, Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am." 12He said, "Do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him, for now I know that you fear God, seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me." 13And Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, behind him was a ram, caught in a thicket by his horns. And Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son.

Isaiah 53:4-7- 4 Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows;

yet we esteemed him stricken,smitten by God, and afflicted.

5 But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities;

upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed. 6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth;

Hebrews 9:22 - 22Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.

Jeremiah 2:13 - 13 for my people have committed two evils:

they have forsaken me,the fountain of living waters, and hewed out cisterns for themselves, broken cisterns that can hold no water.

QUOTE                “Christ… did not come on earth to be a conqueror, or a philosopher, or a mere teacher of morality. He came to save sinners. He came to do that which man could never do for himself - to do that which money and learning can never obtain - to do that which is essential to man’s real happiness: He came to “take away sin.” J.C. Ryle

1 Peter 2:24 - 24He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.

Goat #1

Leviticus 16:15-16 - 15"Then he shall kill the goat of the sin offering that is for the people and bring its blood inside the veil and do with its blood as he did with the blood of the bull, sprinkling it over the mercy seat and in front of the mercy seat. 16Thus he shall make atonement for the Holy Place, because of the uncleannesses of the people of Israel and because of their transgressions, all their sins. And so he shall do for the tent of meeting, which dwells with them in the midst of their uncleannesses

1 John 4:10- 10In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins

Propitiation: a sacrifice that satisfies and turns away the wrath of God.

Goat #2

Leviticus 16:21-22 - 21And Aaron shall lay both his hands on the head of the live goat, and confess over it all the iniquities of the people of Israel, and all their transgressions, all their sins. And he shall put them on the head of the goat and send it away into the wilderness by the hand of a man who is in readiness. 22The goat shall bear all their iniquities on itself to a remote area, and he shall let the goat go free in the wilderness.

Expiation: a sacrifice that removes sin and guilt.

John 1:29 - 29The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!

2 Corinthians 3:18 - 18And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit

QUOTE                “Learn much of the Lord Jesus. For every look at yourself, take ten looks at Christ. He is altogether lovely. Such infinite majesty, and yet such meekness and grace, and all for sinners, even the chief! Live much in the smiles of God. Bask in his beams. Feel his all-seeing eye settled on you in love, and repose in his almighty arms. . . .

                                . . . Let your soul be filled with a heart-ravishing sense of the sweetness and excellency of Christ and all that is in Him. Let the Holy Spirit fill every chamber of your heart; and so there will be no room for folly, or the world, or Satan, or the flesh.” Robert Murray McCheyne

Get Outside

Quote   “Do you know why there are no windows on adult book stores? ...Because they don't want people looking out at the sky....The sky is the enemy of lust.  I just ask you to think back on your struggles.  The sky is a great power against lust.  Pure, lovely, wholesome, powerful, large-hearted things cannot abide the soul of a sexual fantasy at the same time.  I remember as I struggled with these things in my teenage years and in my college years...one way of fighting was simply to get out of the dark places - get out of the lonely rooms...Get out of the places where it is just small - me and my mind and my imagination, what I can do with it and get to where I am just surrounded by color and beauty and bigness and loveliness.  And I know that when I used to sit in my front yard at 122 Bradley Boulevard with a notepad in my hand and a pen trying to write a poem, at that moment, my heart and my body were light years away from the sexual fantasizing that I was tempted by again and again in the late night, quiet, secluded in-house moments.  There is something about bigness, something about beauty that helps battle against the puny, small, cruddy use of the mind to fantasize about sexual things.” John Piper
