Just when you think you have life figured out, it happens - the unexpected. It's ironic how life has so much mystery that leaves us asking more questions than there are answers for. So we go to God. We try to figure Him out. We cross our t's and dot our i's expecting him to be controlled and domesticated. But God is not to be tamed like a circus lion. This blows us up. So what are we to do? Where are we to find meaning and lasting happiness when we don't have all the pat answers we so desperately desire? What do we do when life feels like a bunch of smoke and mirrors? Join us as we go through the enigma, wrapped up in a mystery, surrounded by a riddle within the Bible known as the book of Ecclesiastes.
Title - Who Knows?
Ephesians 2:8 - 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God,
Ephesians 2:9- 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
Ephesians 2:10 - 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
1 Corinthians 15:58 - 58 Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.
Quote: “Grace is not opposed to effort, it is opposed to earning. Earning is an attitude. Effort is an action. Grace, you know, does not just have to do with forgiveness of sins alone.” Dallas Willard
Big Idea: God’s work leads us to good works
Ecclesiastes 11:1- 1 Cast your bread upon the waters, for you will find it after many days.
Ecclesiastes 11:2 - 2 Give a portion to seven, or even to eight, for you know not what disaster may happen on earth.
Don’t Hold Back
Quote: “If we demand a reward to obey God, we love the reward rather than God. The soul that loves God seeks no other reward than that God whom it loves. Were the soul to demand anything else, then it would certainly love that other thing and not God.” Bernard of Clairvaux
Quote“that the wise man will invest everything he has in the life of faith.” Michael Eaton
Ecclesiastes 11:3 - 3 If the clouds are full of rain, they empty themselves on the earth, and if a tree falls to the south or to the north, in the place where the tree falls, there it will lie.
Ecclesiastes 11:4 - 4 He who observes the wind will not sow, and he who regards the clouds will not reap.
Ecclesiastes 11:5 - 5 As you do not know the way the spirit comes to the bones in the womb of a woman with child, so you do not know the work of God who makes everything.
John 3:8 - 8 The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit."
Ecclesiastes 11:6 - 6 In the morning sow your seed, and at evening withhold not your hand, for you do not know which will prosper, this or that, or whether both alike will be good.
Quote: What God will do, you never know; but you will never reap if you never sow! Philip Ryken
