When Jesus died on the cross, religion died with him. As he rose from the dead, religion stayed in the grave. Jesus did not come to start a religion but to secure for us the grace necessary to be the end of religion. The church is not in the religion business; it is in the Gospel-proclaiming business. Religion gives us an unending list of rules that never quite seems possible to complete, but Jesus came to give us life and life to the fullest and freest. Perhaps our view of Christianity, Jesus, God, church and the Bible as a religion is not accurate. What does the Bible actually say about religion? It is dead! Join us as we journey through the book of Galatians.
QUOTE - “freedom is perhaps the most resonant, deeply held American value…. Yet freedom turns out to mean being left alone by others, not having other people’s values, ideas, or styles of life forced upon one, being free of arbitrary authority in work, family, and political life.” Robert Bellah
Galatians 5:1 ESV
For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.
Romans 8:1 ESV
There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
Revelation 12:10 ESV
And I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, "Now the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ have come, for the accuser of our brothers has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God.
QUOTE- “So when the devil throws your sins in your face and declares that you deserve death and hell, tell him this: "I admit that I deserve death and hell, what of it? For I know One who suffered and made satisfaction on my behalf. His name is Jesus Christ, Son of God, and where He is there I shall be also!” Martin Luther
1 Corinthians 15:55-57 ESV
"O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?" The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
QUOTE- “Sanctification is thus simply the art of getting used to justification” Gerhard Forde
Galatians 5:2-3 ESV
Look: I, Paul, say to you that if you accept circumcision, Christ will be of no advantage to you. I testify again to every man who accepts circumcision that he is obligated to keep the whole law.
QUOTE - “Whoever wants half of Christ loses the whole” - John Calvin
Acts 15:1 ESV
But some men came down from Judea and were teaching the brothers, "Unless you are circumcised according to the custom of Moses, you cannot be saved."
Galatians 5:4-6 ESV
You are severed from Christ, you who would be justified by the law; you have fallen away from grace. For through the Spirit, by faith, we ourselves eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness. For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything, but only faith working through love.
Hebrews 9:27 ESV
And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment,
Galatians 5:7-12 ESV
You were running well. Who hindered you from obeying the truth? This persuasion is not from him who calls you. A little leaven leavens the whole lump. I have confidence in the Lord that you will take no other view, and the one who is troubling you will bear the penalty, whoever he is. But if I, brothers, still preach circumcision, why am I still being persecuted? In that case the offense of the cross has been removed. I wish those who unsettle you would emasculate themselves!
QUOTE- “Someone has pictured legalism and license as 2 parallel streams that run between earth and heaven. The stream of legalism is clear, sparkling and pure; but its waters run so deep and furiously that no one can enter it without being drowned or smashed on the rocks of its harsh demands. The stream of license, by contrast, is relatively quiet and still, and crossing it seems easy and attractive. But its waters are so contaminated with poison and pollutants that to try to cross it is also certain death. Both streams are uncrossable and deadly, one because of impossible moral and spiritual demands, the other because of moral and spiritual filth.
Galatians 5:13 ESV
For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.
QUOTE - “Be killing sin or it will be killing you.” John Owen
Galatians 5:14-15 ESV
For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: "You shall love your neighbor as yourself." But if you bite and devour one another, watch out that you are not consumed by one another.
QUOTE - But spanning those two deadly streams is the bridge of the gospel of Jesus, the only passage from earth to heaven. The 2 streams lead to death because they are man’s ways. The gospel leads to life because it is God’s way.” John MacArthur
