He is known by many names - I Am, Second Adam, Son of David, Savior, and Immanuel - just to name a few. We simply call Him Jesus. Who is Jesus, and what's with all the additional names? There are no more important questions people can ask. Join us during this Advent season as we celebrate and focus our attention on the Name above all names, Jesus. Name Above All Names: Advent 2016 November 27th - December 24th.
Big Idea: Jesus saves
I will put enmity between you and the woman,
and between your offspring and her offspring;
he shall bruise your head,
and you shall bruise his heel.”
And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.
“If God were to remove evil in the world he would have to start with me and you.”—Andy Stanley
Sin’s Penalty - Justification “I’ve been made right”
For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people,
Justification: An instantaneous legal act of God in which he (1) thinks of our sins as forgiven and Christ’s righteousness as belonging to us, and (2) declares us to be righteous in his sight.—Wayne Grudem
Sin’s Power - Sanctification “I’m being made right”
training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age,
Sanctification: A progressive work of God and man that makes us more and more free from sin and like Christ in our actual lives.—Wayne Grudem
Sin’s Presence - Glorification “I’ll be all right”
waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works.
Glorification: The final step in the application of salvation. It will happen when Christ returns and raises from the dead the bodies of all believers for all time who have died, and reunites them with their souls, and changes the bodies of all believers who remain alive, thereby giving all believers at the same time perfect resurrection bodies like his own.—Wayne Grudem
“I live as though Christ died yesterday, rose again today, and is coming again tomorrow.”—Martin Luther
“He paid a debt He did not owe, I owed a debt I could not pay!”—Ellis J. Crum
Self-Control: What do you need to “renounce” today?
Upright: What’s the relationship status?
Godly: What needs to happen for me to relate to God rightly?
“The whole dance, or drama, or pattern of this three Personal life is to be played out in each one of us; or (putting it the other way round) each one of us has got to enter that pattern, take his place in the dance…. Good things as well as bad, you know, are caught by a kind of infection. If you want to get warm you must stand near the fire; if you want to be wet you must get into the water. If you want joy, power, peace, eternal life, you must get close to, or even into, the thing that has them…. If you are close to it, the spray will wet you: if you are not, you will remain dry.”—C.S. Lewis
