Idols Suck - Week 1 - What is an Idol?

Idols Suck...

Speaker: Ty Neal
Date: August 02, 2015

I'm sure as soon you see the word "idol" all sorts of images race through your mind. You probably think of little figurines used during worship practices of bygone days or at least something outdated and having no relevance to your life right now. But what if that's not an accurate picture of an idol? What if, at the heart of most (if not all) our problems, our lack of personal satisfaction, our relationship struggles, our identity crises and so much more, there's an idol? You see, an idol can be anything or anyone that captures our hearts, minds, and affections more than God - and that always has devastating effects! Curious about these idols? Want to know more about identifying and ridding them from your life? Then join us for our 5 week series: Idols Suck...the life out of us. August 2nd-30th

1 John 5:21

Little children, keep yourselves from idols.

Romans 1:18-25

For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Claiming to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things. Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen.

Psalm 139:23-24

Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!
