Advent- Light 2017

Advent- Light 2017

Speaker: Pastor Ty Neal
Date: December 03, 2017

Since the fourth century, the Church has celebrated the season of Advent (which means "coming" or "arrival") starting on the fourth Sunday before Christmas day. The celebration of Advent helps us focus our attention on the once anticipated birth of Jesus Christ as well as His promised return. In a season typically marked with busyness and distraction, we can easily miss the point of this season of celebration. Join us as we look back as well as lean forward into the light of Jesus Christ. Light: Advent 2017. December 3rd - 24th.

Title - Advent

QUOTE: “Few things are harder to put up with, than the annoyance of a good example.” Mark Twain

John 8:12 - 12 Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."

Matthew 5:14-16 - 14"You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

QUOTE: “Few things are harder to put up with, than the annoyance of a good example.” Mark Twain

Philippians 2:1-11- 1So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, 2complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. 3Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. 4Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. 5Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Philippians 2:12- 12 Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling,

Philippians 2:13- 13 for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure

Big Idea: The light of Christ works in us to shine through us.

Matthew 6:10-10 Your kingdom come, your will be done,on earth as it is in heaven.

Philippians 2:13- 13 for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure

QUOTE - “Our deeds are our own, because of the will producing them, and they are also God’s, because of his grace causing our will to produce them.” Augustine

QUOTE - “God makes us do what he pleases by making us desire what we might not desire.” Augustine

Philippians 2:14-15- 14Do all things without grumbling or disputing, 15that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world,

Philippians 2:16- 16 holding fast to the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain.

Philippians 2:17- 17 Even if I am to be poured out as a drink offering upon the sacrificial offering of your faith, I am glad and rejoice with you all.

Philippians 2:18- 18 Likewise you also should be glad and rejoice with me.

What work is God doing in you?

How is God shining through you?
