Smoke and Mirrors- What Time is It?

Smoke and Mirrors

Speaker: Pastor Ty Neal
Date: September 10, 2017

Just when you think you have life figured out, it happens - the unexpected. It's ironic how life has so much mystery that leaves us asking more questions than there are answers for. So we go to God. We try to figure Him out. We cross our t's and dot our i's expecting him to be controlled and domesticated. But God is not to be tamed like a circus lion. This blows us up. So what are we to do? Where are we to find meaning and lasting happiness when we don't have all the pat answers we so desperately desire? What do we do when life feels like a bunch of smoke and mirrors? Join us as we go through the enigma, wrapped up in a mystery, surrounded by a riddle within the Bible known as the book of Ecclesiastes.

Title - What Time Is it?

Ecclesiastes 3:1 - 1 For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven:

Ecclesiastes 3:2 -2 a time to be born, and a time to die;
a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted;

Ecclesiastes 3:2-8 - 2 a time to be born, and a time to die;
a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted;
3 a time to kill, and a time to heal;
a time to break down, and a time to build up;
4 a time to weep, and a time to laugh;
a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
5 a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together;
a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
6 a time to seek, and a time to lose;
a time to keep, and a time to cast away;
7 a time to tear, and a time to sew;
a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
8 a time to love, and a time to hate;
a time for war, and a time for peace.

QUOTE - “We would rather be ruined than changed, We would rather die in our dread than climb the cross of the moment and let our illusions die.” W. H. Auden

QUOTE -“Despite everything you have achieved, life refuses to grant you, and always will refuse to grant you, immunity from its difficulties” David Whyte

QUOTE - “the price of avoiding deep, personal change is “the choice of slow death, a mean-ingless and frustrating experience enmeshed in fear, anger, and helplessness, while moving surely toward what is most feared.” Robert Quinn

Ecclesiastes 3:9 9 What gain has the worker from his toil?

Wisdom – Know

Ecclesiastes - 3:1 - 1For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven:

Big Idea: God is in control of the seasons.

Ecclesiastes 3:10 -10I have seen the business that God has given to the children of man to be busy with.

Ecclesiastes 3:11 11 He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, he has put eternity into man’s heart, yet so that he cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end

Ecclesiastes 3:12-13 12 I perceived that there is nothing better for them than to be joyful and to do good as long as they live; 13also that everyone should eat and drink and take pleasure in all his toil—this is God’s gift to man.

Ephesians 2:8-10 - 8For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9not a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

Genesis 50:20 - 20As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today.

Quote - We are completely known by God, but we cannot completely know the plans or purposes of God because we are not God. The mirror before our faces is murky (1 Cor. 13:12), and our window into heaven is narrow. What, then, should we do? Under the sunlight of God’s sovereignty, we should be holy and happy. Rejoice in the Lord. Obey Christ’s commands. Do good to others. Eat your roast-beef sand-wich. Sip your Scotch. Smile, God loves you. Seriously. Douglas Sean O’Donnell

Ecclesiastes 3:11 - 11He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, he has put eternity into man’s heart, yet so that he cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end.

Ecclesiastes 3:14-15 14I perceived that whatever God does endures forever; nothing can be added to it, nor anything taken from it. God has done it, so that people fear before him. 15That which is, already has been; that which is to be, already has been; and God seeks what has been driven away.

Romans 5:6-8 6For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 7For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— 8but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Romans 11:36 36For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.
