Religion Is Dead - Week 17 - Bragging Rights

Religion Is Dead

Speaker: Tim Fraiser
Date: June 27, 2016

When Jesus died on the cross, religion died with him. As he rose from the dead, religion stayed in the grave. Jesus did not come to start a religion but to secure for us the grace necessary to be the end of religion. The church is not in the religion business; it is in the Gospel-proclaiming business. Religion gives us an unending list of rules that never quite seems possible to complete, but Jesus came to give us life and life to the fullest and freest. Perhaps our view of Christianity, Jesus, God, church and the Bible as a religion is not accurate. What does the Bible actually say about religion? It is dead! Join us as we journey through the book of Galatians.

Religion is Dead: Bragging Rights

Big Idea: We boast in nothing but the cross.

Galatians 6:11-12 ESV

See with what large letters I am writing to you with my own hand. It is those who want to make a good showing in the flesh who would force you to be circumcised, and only in order that they may not be persecuted for the cross of Christ.

Revelation 3:15-16 ESV

"'I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot. Would that you were either cold or hot! So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth.

Galatians 6:13-14 ESV

For even those who are circumcised do not themselves keep the law, but they desire to have you circumcised that they may boast in your flesh. But far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.

Quote: If people would just like you, you'd be satisfied. Or if you could just have good job with a good wife and a couple good kids and a nice car and long weekends and a few good friends, a fun retirement, and quick and easy death and no hell. If you could have that— you'd be satisfied. THAT is a tragedy in the making. - John Piper

John 10:10 ESV

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.

Galatians 6:15-18 ESV

For neither circumcision counts for anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creation. And as for all who walk by this rule, peace and mercy be upon them, and upon the Israel of God. From now on let no one cause me trouble, for I bear on my body the marks of Jesus. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brothers. Amen.
