Advent: Name Above All Names - Week 5 - Immanuel

Advent: Name Above All Names

Speaker: Ty Neal
Date: December 24, 2016

He is known by many names - I Am, Second Adam, Son of David, Savior, and Immanuel - just to name a few. We simply call Him Jesus. Who is Jesus, and what's with all the additional names? There are no more important questions people can ask. Join us during this Advent season as we celebrate and focus our attention on the Name above all names, Jesus. Name Above All Names: Advent 2016 November 27th - December 24th.

Title Immanuel

“It is here, in the thing that happened at the first Christmas, that the profoundest and most unfathomable depths of the Christian revelation are found” J. I. Packer

Matthew 1:1 - The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.

Matthew 1:18 - Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit.

Part of the purpose of the virgin birth of Jesus is to show us that salvation does not come from man, but from God. Salvation is wholly the work of a supernatural God, not the work of natural man. Platt, David

Matthew 1:19 - And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly.

Matthew 1:20 - But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.

Jesus - “God Saves”

Matthew 1:21 - She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”

“In an act of unfathomable love, Deity becomes dust, the Maker becomes maligned, the Creator becomes the cursed. God comes in Christ to restore the relationship we rejected in the garden. We learn that the greatest gift God gives us is himself.”
- Bob Kaulfin

Immanuel - “God With Us”

Matthew 1:22-23 - All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet:
23 “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,
and they shall call his name Immanuel”

Matthew 1:24-25 - When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife, 25but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus.

“I should not have sought you unless you had first found me” - Augustine

“The whole dance, or drama, or pattern of this three Personal life is to be played out in each one of us; or (putting it the other way round) each one of us has got to enter that pattern, take his place in the dance… . Good things as well as bad, you know, are caught by a kind of infection. If you want to get warm you must stand near the fire; if you want to be wet you must get into the water. If you want joy, power, peace, eternal life, you must get close to, or even into, the thing that has them… . If you are close to it, the spray will wet you: if you are not, you will remain dry.” C. S. Lewis

John 8:12 - Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

Isaiah 60:1-3 - Arise, shine, for your light has come,
and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you.
2 For behold, darkness shall cover the earth,
and thick darkness the peoples;
but the Lord will arise upon you,
and his glory will be seen upon you.
3 And nations shall come to your light,
and kings to the brightness of your rising.

Matthew 4:16 - the people dwelling in darkness
have seen a great light, and for those dwelling in the region and shadow of death, on them a light has dawned.”
